Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Local government autonomy refers to the degree of independence and decision-making power granted to local government institutions by the central government. In Nigeria, local governments are expected to have the authority to manage their resources and implement policies tailored to their unique needs. In Gusau Local Government Area (LGA), Zamfara State, the level of autonomy enjoyed by local government authorities has a significant impact on the region’s rural development initiatives. This study explores how local government autonomy influences rural development projects and the capacity of the local government to address community needs in Gusau LGA.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While local government autonomy is critical for effective governance and rural development, the actual implementation of autonomy often faces challenges, including interference from state and federal authorities, lack of financial independence, and poor capacity to manage development projects. This study will investigate the effects of local government autonomy on rural development in Gusau LGA, identifying both the opportunities and constraints created by local autonomy.

1.6 Significance of the Study

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on Gusau LGA, Zamfara State, and will examine the impact of local government autonomy on rural development projects. Limitations may include difficulties in accessing data on local government policies and rural development initiatives due to bureaucratic processes.
